WELCOME!
Please make yourself at home! I have a great many interests and enjoy writing about them from time to time. I also write some short fiction and appreciate criticism as well as praise.

The title of this blog comes from my own heritage: I am half Scottish (thistle), a quarter English (rose) with a dash of Irish (shamrock) and German thrown in for good measure. Also, it sounds very much like the name of some obscure pub one often encounters when traveling through the British Isles, so pour youself a pint and enjoy!

The Lure of the Phantom ~ Part One

As Katherine sat down in her chair, she sighed. “ Music class is always SOO boring!”  She thought to herself.   “What awful thing will Mrs. Furlong make us sing today? Music is supposed to be enjoyed, not loathed!”  As the other students arranged themselves in the small music room, Mrs. Furlong entered and announced that they were going to begin their practice for the spring
concert, on May 12th.  Kathy jerked her head up, “What?! That’s my birthday! You can’t possibly mean that I will have to go to the dumb spring concert on my birthday?” She slouched down in her chair and failed to hear what Mrs. Furlong was telling them.

Completely lost in her own depressing thoughts, Kathy slowly came back to her senses as she listened to a friend of hers, Emily, play a piece on the piano.  Looking up to see exactly what was going on, Kathy became almost entranced by the music. It filled her head and touched her heart.  Although Kathy did love music, she had never heard anything as divine as this. When Emily was finished playing, Kathy noticed for the first time, that not only had she been holding her breath as her friend had played, but that tears were streaming down her face.  She quickly looked around to see if anyone had noticed, and wiped the tears quickly away.  During the rest of the class, her mind was filled with the memory of that music; it was all she could think about.  The first thing she did when she got home was asking her father about it.

“The Phantom of the Opera?” her father asked.  “Yes, do you know anything about it?” Replied Kathy, as she took off her backpack and set down in the dining room.  “Of course. It is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.  Wait, I think I still have the original cast recording on tape.  After dinner, I will go look for it.”  Deep inside, something in Kathy made her want to scream! She didn’t want to wait till after dinner!  However, she knew that her father would be true to his word, and it would be better to get her homework out of the way.
